The story here.
The Dems and Obama are always speaking about how we have lost standing with our allies, but this sounds different:
Britain is among the European countries understood to be concerned that Barack Obama’s promise to hold unconditional talks with Iran risks weakening the tough stance on economic sanctions they have adopted at the urging of the White House and at considerable cost to European business.
Yet this in response to the Iranian, Obama said this to Matt Lauer this morning: (H/T to Jim Geraghty)
I think we’ve got to gather up all the intelligence necessary with the situation, but there’s no doubt that we’re seeing rising tensions in the area. And it’s part of the reason why it’s so important for us to have a coherent policy with respect to Iran. It has to combine much tougher threats of economic sanctions with direct diplomacy, opening up channels of communication so that we avoid provocation but we give strong incentives to the Iranians to change their behavior.
First Obama says a country as small as Iran is no threat, then he says he’s always maintained that thay they are a threat. This is no flip-flop. This continues to not only demonstrate a pattern of poor judgement, but a lack thereof.
Adds Jim Geraghty:
It seems unthinkable to Obama that the Iranians could have actually determined that having a nuclear weapon is in their self-interest. Much like small town Pennsylvanians, he knows what motivates them better than they know themselves.
