POLITICS: Is Mike Huckabees Aversion to Mitt Romney Raw Opportunism?

Some conservative commentors believe so.

Writing at The Corner, Kathyrn Jean Lopez expresses her disappointment in Huckabee’s campaign and calls Huckabee a divider on these comments:

“I think a lot of people, not just social conservatives, but a lot of the Republicans I know are not necessarily comfortable with Romney,” he told CBS. “But it has nothing to do with religion. It has everything to do with inconsistencies in positions he’s held, and that’s it.”

Carol Platt Liebau is even more pointed:

What’s interesting is that Mike Huckabee is trying to stir up opposition to Romney, too. That clarifies two things: First, that Huckabee is desperate to prevent Romney from gaining whatever political advantage a veep nomination would bring him. Second, it shows that Huckabee is willing to stir up party dissension — and thereby increase the chances of an Obama victory, however incrementally — for his own personal advantage. That’s revealing, and (alliteration alert!) part of an ongoing Huckabee pattern of placing his personal interest above principle or party.

Look. Rush Limbaugh, Hugh Hewitt, Laura Ingraham and others whose conservative credentials are every bit as solid as Huckabee’s — more so, in fact — were ready to embrace Romney. That may not be great for Huckabee, but it does show that the issue of Romney’s conservative bona fides is not one that’s troubling to most mainstream right-of-center voters.

Huckabee is becoming a TV star and is a regular on MSNBC. The media certainly loves it that Huckabee is so vocal in his opposition to Romney. Whatever the reason, he cannot justify why is so outspoken against him.

I agree with you totally. Huckabee is really making himself look bad by speaking out against Romney. Just like he made himself look bad by staying in the race as long as he did. When Romney dropped out when he did, I was not only shocked, but gained a whole new view of him. He has gained my respect in the way that he has shown his commitment and support for the party.
