From Hot Air, comes the affirmation that rising republican star, Govenor Sarah Palin is being vetted as a potential running mate for John McCain.
In another Hot Air post, Ed Morrissey says that McCain is using the Alaska govenor as cover to drill in ANWAR. I felt at some point McCain would do this, and as increasing domestic drilling was going to be a winner for Republicans Palin would be a viable candidate as his #2.
But problems with the Russians again might change things.
Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan are one thing indeed. Yet it is still a regional war thats now being managed by a general whom history may recognize as one of our greatest in David Petraus. Petraus needs backing by a strong boss at home and one who can withstand partisan sniping.
The Russians are a much different devil with its own seperate details. Although weakened after the break-up of the old Soviet block (experts say that in the Georgian invasion, the Russians were using some outdated Cold War era equipment) the Russians still have superpower status. Their current venture into Georgia indicate they have found again their appetite for expansion. And as a permanent member of the UN’s Security Council, the Russians have lifetime trump card capabilities to go along with cunning diplomatic ways.
It may be that this changes things for Palin. While plausible as president, she is young and inexperienced in foreign policy issues. While a clear rising star in Republican politics like Louisiana Govenor Bobby Jindal, this is not their time.
Vladimir Putin’s decision to roll Russian armor into South Ossetia changed world order. John McCain is clearly much more ready for these challenges than is Barack Obama. But McCain – like Obama – might be turning to someone both recognized and used to being on the world stage. It might be why stories are coming out about Obama’s interest in John Kerry. It also might be we start hearing the names Joe Lieberman, Tom Ridge and Rudi Giuliani as McCain’s #2 in the days to come.

But, then again …
No kidding, John. I must admit that I’d not known as much as I know about Palin as now. Her experience as a mayor and govenor who actually accomplished something overwhelms Obama’s resume. But there’s much more to Palin’s remarkable political career having served on government committees and taking on political opponents. Obama’s entire political career has been one of adulation only having to vote on issues and well, make speeches. Come to think of it Obama’s career best parallels that of John Edwards
