“From the mouths of babes” is famous kids proverb about wisdom is our society. I use it, too. But a favorite source of wisdom for me has come out of the mouth of my 81 year old mother.
A couple of years ago – long before Peggie Noonan started raising eyebrows among those whom shared her conservative ideal – Mom commented that she thought that Noonan was starting to be influenced by the Manhattan liberal elites she lived among. She might well be right as I can think of little else that would explain Noonan’s astonshing pointed criticism of Sarah Palin.
For those of us whom don’t live in either New York or Washington and seperate of our personal politics- its been easy to understand who Palin and her family are. For a number of us, accepting Palin is second nature as we encounter someone like her every day and in everything we do. So why not Noonan, who has earned such conservative bonifides?
I suppose Palin’s resume has been dismissed out of hand by Noonan. From school board to city council to mayor to govenor is somehow both unimportant and without merit. Nevermind her record of accomplishment. This alone easily stands next to that of Barck Obama’s and indeed does surpass it in many ways. For Noonan sadly, this leaves only Sarah Palin on a personal level.
Maybe it is Palin’s modest academic vitae as it is not Ivy League, Oxford or Wharton. Maybe it is her lack of quality time with the same folks as she inside the Beltway and in the Upper West Side. Can’t get by without those kind of sensibilities. Let alone those of the lofty folks at NBC.
So is it her lack of gravitas? Might as well trot out that talking points’ term from a recent election cycle. Or maybe its just the way Palin talks about the things she’s always talked about as a public servant. Her manner demonstrates such a lack of ecouter. (Thats french for depth, all my fellow simple-minded dolts. I looked it up.) Palin probably doesn’t speak French anyhow. Surely this alone disqualifies her.
Noonan is “going there” by clearly saying that Palin lacks as she doesn’t have the level of knowledge and intelligence that’s expected of the job. The “there” is the judgement that only our liberal friends save for us. Its our intelligence, stupid.
Save the staunch democrats in my life, I’ve found that even the lucky folks whom don’t take politics seriously have enjoyed Palin’s arrival on the scene. The base of conservatives that Noonan mocked in her last column are as excited about Palin in ways that astonishes ouselves.
Sarah Palin has received the kind of liberal establishment hate that’s been reserved for the Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich. Its being noted. And unlike many of the conservative intelligencia – of which is Noonan – everyday conservative voters see many things in Sarah Palin we like and desire in leaders. Palin’s wisdom, leadership and courage is coupled with a trust the conservative base has rarely experienced.
The left loathes and often fears these qualities. It has contempt for the conservative base and its values. Why Peggie Noonan has chosen to share this contempt is a mystery.
