METS: Is low-balling Derek Lowe such a good idea?

According to reports, the Mets have offered a three year deal to free agent starter Derek Lowe that’s significantly lower than what he and Scott Boras have been seeking. Its a low ball offer and the Mets are gambling a bit with its interpretation of the current market.

Lowe is a relaible innings eater that doesn’t miss starts. He’s hardened and can pitch on the big stage, and would prove to be relaible in what seems to be a pitcher-friendly Citi Field.

With the understandable uncertainty that exists with John Maine and Mike Pelfrey, Lowe provides somthing the Mets need badly. Lowe is the best of the free agent starters left and the best fit for the Mets. Losing him to the Phillies – who have expressed interest – would be a crushing blow to what has been a fairly successful offseason for Omar Minaya.

What hopefully happened is that the offer submitted to Boras is understood to be a starting point and that he will give the Mets a final shot. Its certain that Boras would love to have bidding war for his client between to competing divison clubs. But the Mets have a very good relationship with Boras who won’t do anything to harm it.

The Mets need Lowe. His signing, coupled with a change at 2B to Orlando Hudson would improve this club by quite a bit.
