I’m prayerful the Obama presidency means something we can all be thankful for…and that is it will make previous role models for African American kids less valid. Its no longer rap stars or athletes or hate mongering ministers. Its an accomplished and classy couple who are very good parents. As a conservative republican and teacher I see just how crucial this may be for so many youth today. To his credit the president has made an attempt to distance from hateful rhetoric – and I’m sure that he and his staff hope folks like me won’t bring up Joe Lowery’s performance today. And perhaps it will be mark a time when african americans turn their political gaze to a broader spectrum of political views and one which more refelects their values of family and self determination.
