Politics, Education, Culture, and oh....the Mets. A former athletic trainer for the NY Mets, the writer still follows his team while offering his own unique outlook on politics. A life long GOP conservative, this high school teacher has departed from his party roots and takes issue with the Florida GOP's legislative agenda on education. Recent favorite topics involve Florida's controversial education reform bill SB 6, local efforts to defeat Allen Boyd (D) FLA 2nd and the Florida Senate race.

Billie Kennedy, Jr. agrees with me that the GOP currently in position to defeat Allen Boyd. Writing in Northwest Florida Rebublican, Kennedy says:

While I do think that we have a long way to go to get rid of Congressman Allen Boyd, we can make it happen. We have a couple of Republican contenders who are raising money feverishly and need even more to compete with Congressman Boyd’s considerable war chest.

But at this moment, we have a long way to go to move Boyd from a safe Democrat seat to a Republican seat

None of the current crop of candidates have made any recent updates on their web sites or are consistently using Twitter. To be fair, Charlie Ransom has added a pretty good intro video on his site.

Kennedy indicates that a few of the candidates are having some success raising money. The primary will be key though as with so many entered, individual name recognition among candidates is key. It may be that the candidate whom raises the most money wins. Still, the candidates need to be ramping up their alternative media resources.

UPDATE: Panama City businessman Steve Southerland leads in raising money. Southerland has an advantage in that he’s the only Republican drawing from the Panama City area. The majority of the rest are attempting to raise money around Tallahassee and are going against a popular Tea Party candidate in Paul McKain. Santa Rosa Beach attorney Barbara Olschner is a dark horse in the race and can initially be the only one receiving potential finacial support in affluent south Walton County.

What took her so long to come up with this one? She should have defended he vote in this manner from the start. Say’s Jindal:

“I’m against the health care bill and always have been. You would have to live in a cave not to know that. I opposed it even with the FMAP language in it. I am glad the health care bill is dead. We can have honest debates about the issues and honest disagreements. I thought the health care bill was awful. Some members of Congress disagreed with my position and voted for it. That’s OK. The bottom line is that we are all going to have to work together and across party lines to fix the faulty FMAP formula that unfairly penalizes the health care needs of the poorest people in our state. That is an effort that can stand on its own merits,” he said.

Landrieu’s being a little too cute with the e-mail sent from Jindal’s cheif of staff. It signal’s that she is in big trouble at home. She have noticed President Obama publically telling Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln that there will be no move that protects Democrats interests.

The public under the bus toss of Lincoln’s political career further reveals Obama’s disturbing philosophy. He’s not a partisan democrat and any illusion of him being a pragmatist can be thrown out. He indeed wants to fundamentally change America in ways that his long time personal associates have always wanted.

UPDATE: Landrieu also tells Republicans to “shut their mouths”

Insert John McEnroe’s “YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME” here.

I don’t know how Newsweek even went with the piece by Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy. But here’s a bit of one of the most outrageous comments ever made:

In truth, though, Obama’s pragmatic approach to divisive policy (his notion that we should acknowledge the good faith underlying opposing viewpoints) and his social-justice agenda reflect the views of American Catholic laity much more closely than those vocal bishops and pro-life activists. When Obama meets the pope tomorrow, they’ll politely disagree about reproductive freedoms and homosexuality, but Catholics back home won’t care, because they know Obama’s on their side. In fact, Obama’s agenda is closer to their views than even the pope’s.

Deal W. Hudson responds in insidectholic.com:

I very rarely used the word “offensive,” because it is thrown around so casually by the Left all the time. In this case, however, I have to say Townsend’s column offends me for both its arrogance and its ignorance of the “American Catholics” she presumes to know so well.

Maybe there’s good news in all this as Democrats are be coming off their messianic thing with Obama and have down graded him to just above the Pope status.

Guest blogging at Townhall, Rep. John Flemming, MD (LA) joins the wave of those attempting to turn our system into socialized medicine. It is a model Americans know well. And they fear it. The American people do not want the devestation that the Obama plan will bring to their families. Here’s Flemings entire post:

Over the past few weeks, members of Congress and the American people have come to know the details of the Administration’s proposed health care plan. Call it what you like, this proposal is nothing more than government-run health care. As a physician, I am amazed at the number of bureaucrats in this House who are quick to claim a government-run health care plan is the reform this country needs. In response to this, I have offered a resolution that will offer members of Congress an opportunity to put their money where their mouth is, and urge their colleagues who vote for legislation creating a government-run health care plan to lead by example and enroll themselves in the same public plan.

Under the current draft of the Democrat health care legislation, members of Congress are curiously exempt from the government-run health care option, keeping their existing health plans and services on Capitol Hill. If Members of Congress believe so strongly that government-run health care is the best solution for hard working American families, I think it only fitting that Americans see them lead the way. Public servants should always be accountable and responsible for what they are advocating, and I challenge the American people to demand this from their representatives.

You really didn’t think that they were going to play by the rules they assert on you, did you?

I hope that her health is ok as she underwent treatment for breast cancer last year. Still an accomplished candidate taking on the archaic feminism of Barbara Boxer will be welcome. I hope she’s OK and will jump in the race.

Fiorina’s emmergence as a potential candidate demonstrate just how behind the GOP is in recruiting. It seems easier to get them for open seats like in Florida (Crist and Rubio) and in Ohio (Portman) But to my knowledge, Fiorina is the only high powered GOP figure willing to take on a sitting Democrat.

Democrat Congressman Allen Boyd will have problems with Florida Panhandle voters over his yes vote on cap and trade. Conservative Ponderment has more.

Why Boyd who represents a very conservative district would support Nancy Pelosi’s bill is a mystery. Boyd is the leader of the Democrat Bliue Dog conference. Perhaps he was strong armed by Pelosi as he needs funding. His son was arrested last year on immigration smuggling charges. Panhandle voters won’t tolerate a Democrat more loyal to Nancy Pelosi than they are to their interests.

AJ Strata has a marvelously detailed post this morning on the frightening increase in unemployment in states lie Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, New York and Pennsylvania. All states went for Obama last year. Say’s Strata who provides some excellent graphics:

The liberal economic experiment to use the government to stimulate job creation is an utter and complete failure. Obama and the Dems may have inherited a problem, but their answers to the problems were all wrong. And that realization will come to hit the American public as this unemployment debacle runs through out the summer of 2009

I wonder what will happen when some of the fall-out begins from the closing of auto dealerships. These will be felt in more rural area, and Democrats and Obama really don’t care about those areas.

Its time for local grassroots efforts by Republicans in those districts to go on the offensive to defeat Democrat congressional candidates. The Ron Paul voters whom voted for Obama will not be voting for Democrats next fall.
