Politics, Education, Culture, and oh....the Mets. A former athletic trainer for the NY Mets, the writer still follows his team while offering his own unique outlook on politics. A life long GOP conservative, this high school teacher has departed from his party roots and takes issue with the Florida GOP's legislative agenda on education. Recent favorite topics involve Florida's controversial education reform bill SB 6, local efforts to defeat Allen Boyd (D) FLA 2nd and the Florida Senate race.

Charlie Crist’s noon veto today of the GOP driven education reform bill in Florida is a teachable moment. Going along with the hyper-conseravtive elements of the party isn’t always the right thing to do. It wasn’t here. Crist’s veto today saved the party that cast him aside for a media darling whom is proving to be nothing more than a tool of a former govenor with a questionable agenda.

Marco Rubio never said why SB 6 was right for Florida- or any other state for that matter. He just has continued to ride the tsunami of justifiable rage at continuing Democrat confiscation of our nation. The bill he supported was unfunded, unexplained and largely left to still unhired bureaucrats on details But Rubio, nor any GOP leader in Florida’s legislature, never saw the raw hypocrisy of their folly.

What they acheived was so stunningly parallel to that which they had so recently condemned. SB 6′s passage was a virtual mirror image of Democrats’ national takeover of our health care. So alarming was the mirror, one easily wonders when any of it’s sponsors would have a Sir Alec Guinness moment of the River Kwai.

Predictably, GOP partisan calls of righteous contempt were aimed at Charlie Crist today. It was all an attempt to save his GOP senate bid you see. Unlike lathered up conservatives, Crist has a job to do as govenor of the nation’s fourth largest state.

Govenor Crist has now twice demonstrated he would do what he felt was right for his state without regard for political consequences. He continues to maintain that it was the right thing to do accept stimulus money for his financially unstable state at. Today he did not choose politcal expediency to curry favor with critics. He listened to people on multiple sides of an issue and made the decision felt was in the best interest of his state.

That’s judgement, leadership and courage. Marco Rubio’s rise is similar to that of Barack Obama, his celebrity largely media driven. Charlie Crist’s career now is looking like that of John McCain’s in comparison. Unlike Obama’s Illinois congressional record, McCain and now Crist have had to make tough calls. It’s what they were elected to do.

So maybe that independent maverick thing wasn’t so bad afterall.

Sarah Palin didn’t use a teleprompter last night in her 40 minute keynote address at the Tea Party convention in Nashville. She doesn’t need one even in a speech she knows is televised nationally on C-Span.

A always lively exchange can be found at Just One Minute. I posted these comments earlier with respect to Palin:

I believe that it’s time we started to put an end to the idea that Palin is inexperienced.

Closer to the truth is the idea that she was more experienced than was McCain, Obama and Biden. She was the only one who had executive experience as govenor of a state. She’d run a large state agency. She’d been a successful local public servant as a school board member and mayor. An unlike any of the others she really does know what it’s like to run a small business – the family fishing business.

Much was made of the Obama judgement. Bill Bradley ran that up the flag pole when he endorsed him. Clearly his judgement is faulty unless it’s taking actions that have anything to do with his own dangerous ideologies. Judgement – which comes after wisdom – is gained through experience. This our president had very, very little.

Aside that is from associations with anti-American leftists, stuffy Harvard faculty types and organizing a corrupt agency. No, Obama has lived a life – as Krauthammer insightfully pointed out – a life of simple adulation.

Not only is his ideology a danger to America, but so is his lack of experience in making decisions. It should be of greatest concern to the nation that he surrounds himself with sycophants in the inner circle.

Palin is the antithesis to everything that is Obama and the extreme left wing of his party. While attempts to demonize her in some of the most disgustingly unacceptable ways imaginable, she’s evolving in a way those whom demonize her fear most. More than being an effective contrarian voice, she’s becoming a figure – even a symbol- of significance.

Not afraid to be an independent voice among her own party, she has endorsed and will campaign for John McCain against the popular conservative J.D. Hayworth. She’s thrown her support behind Rhan Paul in the Kentucky GOP senate primary against the establishment and Mitch McConnel supported candidate. She will also campaign for Texas Govenor Rick Perry going against the power of the Bush family and Dick Cheney.

She’s also grown and become more polished. In today’s interview with Chris Wallace, she gained the upper hand even when Wallace attempted to dismiss some of her statements. Any attempt by Wallace to get his Katie Couric moment was swatted aside by Palin.

And they sure loved her last night in Nashville.

Alex Smith writes in the tremendous blog on Florida politics in the St. Petersburg Times about speculation that appeared in the DailyKos.

Kos envisions Charlie Crist pulling a Specter and saving his bacon by switching to Democratic party – and would be fine with that: I predict that by the end of the year (or end of Q1 2010 at the latest), the polls in that Republican primary will be tied.

So the question will then be — at what point will Crist realize that he’s in deep shit? It took collapsing poll numbers for Specter to hit the “panic!” button and switch parties. That’s probably what it’ll take for Crist to realize his problems, and when he does, he’ll have a tough call to make: go down with his party, or pull a Specter and ditch it for better electoral prospects on a different line. That could mean a switch to the Democratic Party where he’d likely be no worse than the other senator from Florida, Bill Nelson — a marginally good Democrat, a step up from Landrieu, Nebraska’s Nelson, and the Wal Mart Twins (and no better).

Not sure Kos fully appreciates what kind of campaigner – and fundraiser – Crist is, or his ability to define and drown an opponent who poses a serious threat. Charlie ain’t Arlen

Smith, one of the most knowledgeable reporters on state politics realizes that Marco Rubio is mounting a formidable campaign against the Govenor. But he indicates that Crist is no Arlen Specter.

As reported in my previous link from Congressman John Campbell, Amanda Carpenter confirms this extroidinary improptu meeting that Republicans are having on the floor of the House chambers.

The CSPAN cameras have been turned off and the House Democrats are on their way home, but members of the GOP are staying late.

I’m getting reports from the Hill that House Republicans are gathering on the House floor, in the dark, with no microphones, to talk directly with taxpayers who are visiting the Capitol about gas prices.

Pelosi and her environmentalist pay masters have no intention of allowing more drilling. Today’s extroidinary events on the House floor cements the issue for Republicans. Look for them to exploit in a manner which could turn several seats back to republicans. John McCain has already signaled he is on board with off shore drilling with Obama being steadfastly against it.

This issue more than others may affect who McCain picks as VP. It may move Alaska Govenor Sarah Palin to the front. Palin is an extremely effective advocate for drilling and her presence could additional juice to a ticket which is already gaining some steam.
