Politics, Education, Culture, and oh....the Mets. A former athletic trainer for the NY Mets, the writer still follows his team while offering his own unique outlook on politics. A life long GOP conservative, this high school teacher has departed from his party roots and takes issue with the Florida GOP's legislative agenda on education. Recent favorite topics involve Florida's controversial education reform bill SB 6, local efforts to defeat Allen Boyd (D) FLA 2nd and the Florida Senate race.

“Meet the old boss. Same as the new boss.”

With apologies to The Who, I fear we are seeing much of the same we left off with last year. Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran will not be in the opening day line-up. Carlos Delgado and his Hall of Fame type numbers are gone from first base and a a journeyman will open there. Mike Pelfrey, John Maine and Oliver Perez are healthy but have had lackluster springs. And unlike previous seasons, we’re not sure whom will take the mound in the 8th.

It’s not hopeful.

But let’s hope nonetheless.

Jason Bay will be in the line-up on opening day as will another new leader in Jeff Franceour. David Wright will not be alone in the middle of the line-up. The two players that have vied for the centerfield job in Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr have been pleasant surprises and one could be dealt to bring back pitching. Maybe the catching will be better and make a difference. Ike Davis, Fernando Martinez and Jennry Mejia look like they will be future All-Stars.

The minor league system is not barren afterall and under more effective and positive leadership than was during the Tony Bernazard regime. The Mets are embracing their past. Wally Backman’s back. Tim Teufel is the AA manager. They both look like future managers in Flushing.

But there’s still the start to this season.

If the club gets off to a poor start, the Omar and Jerry watch will begin. If it gets bad, the team will play as if they are waiting for someone or more than one to get fired.

I don’t think that Jeff Wilpon will put everyone through that. He’s made it clear that Minaya no longer has his favor. People are already in place to easily step into both positions. Wilpon won’t get fooled again and will act quickly and decisively.

Sometimes it almost seems like they are cheering for the Mets to go wrong. Note Bill Madden’s column today bemoaning Oliver Perez’ “poor” outing. It was Ollie’s FIRST OUTING in the spring. No one ever pays any attention to anyone’s first time out in the spring. Madden knows this.

Madden goes further and points to Jose Reyes’ illness (he’ll be back) Frankie Rodriguez’ pink eye (c’mon man) and Kelvim Escobar’s slow progress (already knew about it). Nevermind that a better story is being covered in the blogosphere about how well Mets’ prospects have done thus far.

This traditionally is what the media covers at this point in spring training, but a New York reality is far different. Back pages are sold at toll booths, by street vendors and in train stations. Fair enough, but the New York media again is showing it is both predictable and far too often speaks collectively.

Joe Janish does a good job in extending my own remarks. I agree with him that Putz probably should have been shut down when persistent pain surfaced in his elbow. I’m hesitant to comment in depth as I was not there to hear Putz’ own feedback of how he was feeling. There is no way of knowing what he was saying to the Mets staff as he was aware of his own contract situation.

Reagrding Putz further, a question should be asked at as to whether of not the Mariners were candid with the Mets about Putz’ health. That does not absolve the Mets, however, from doing their own physical exam like they did before signing Pedrom Martinez in 2004. Did they receive his medical records? If they recieved accurate ones, they should have been concerned as it would look much like Janish’s timeline. Putz was apparently hurting enough when he arrived in camp for it to be an issue during his spring training physical exam. Consideration via hindsight does not reflect well on the Mets. But the Mariners were indeed aware of Putz’ history and can be said to have knowingly traded damaged goods.

The rehabilitation for removal of foreign bodies from of the elbow is relatively short, and in hind sight a more prudent decision would have been for an arthroscopy when pain persisted. A noteworthy comparison is that a similarly injured Johan Santana is doing so well right now. I have no way of knowing why that decision was not made.

Dr. David Altcheck took over for Dr. James C. Parkes after the 1991 season. Altchek was a departure from the conservative Parkes in that he appeared to recommend surgery for players much quicker than would have Parkes. Whe Joe McIlvaine returned to the Mets as GM in 1993 he asked Altcheck why there appears to have been so many surguries. The Mets contracted their physician care out to a hospital that payed them a lot of money for a few years before they turned to Altcheck before the 2004 season.

In the cases of Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes and Putz there seems to be a change in philosophy to opt for surgery. I doubt that that philosophy is driven by Altcheck. Last season the Mets also clearly displayed similar hesitancy in placing these same players on the disabled list. Observers are probably wondering outloud about how long Santana was hurting before it was decided to perform surgery on him.

Joe Janish does a great job today of sifting through the story and asks all the right questions.

At any rate, my surprise begins with the news that the Mets never made any inquiries about Putz health prior to the trade and that the club trivialized his injury. Significant assets were committed to get Putz and now he is gone without anything resembling compensation.

A Mets statement somewhat contradicts Putz:

We were aware that [Putz] had a bone spur before the trade,” the statement said.

“He had the same condition in 2008 and was able to pitch with it. J.J. underwent an exam during spring training and an additional exam and MRI before he was cleared to play in last year’s WBC [World Baseball Classic]. Unfortunately, the spur did flare up again in May and he missed the rest of the season.”

Putz seems to be overatating his problems with the Mets as the Mets did an MRI on Putz before they let him go the the WBC. Putz said nothoing of this is his interview. To say the Mets mishandled or mistreated him is false. They took a chance on Putz elbow would be a non factor and probably relied on much of what they Mariners were telling them.

Pitchers frequently pitch with spurs or chips present within the elbow’s hinge joint. Unless problems begin – meaning pain – they are allowed to pitch. But when a pitcher begins hurting, it’s shut down time. As in Putz case and from the timeline that Janish provided, it appears that the bone spur that Putz developed is something we see quite frequently. To make a comparison, the development is similar to that of heal spurs after years of plantar fasciitis on the bottom of a foot. We often inject painful heal spurs with some success.

Unlike a shoulder where a bursa sack can be injected, the elbow does not provide such an effective target for costisone. Putz received and injection last year in May last year likely intended to decrease the spur.

The easiest path has been to jump in another public Mets beat down and I would have if the medical staff hadn’t done an MRI prior to Putz going off to the WBC. A larger issue that provides much more interesting dynamics comes up when one notes the large number of Mets whom participated in the WBC suffered season ending injuries last season. The list include Putz, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, Johan Santana, and Oliver Perez. All of these injuries can be categorized as being of the over use variety.

The Mets don’t seemed to have publically advanced this theory as it could cause them considerable political problems within the industry. Having said this, it will intersting to see how the Mets handle the issue in the run up to the next one in 2013.

If the Mets sign Frank Catalanotto, it will create some competition for jobs in spring training. He represents the 25th player. On the surface that’s a good thing, but it could suppress some of the younger players who have may have options left on their contracts.

If Catalanotto is signed and makes the club along with Fernando Tatis, it’s unlikely that either Chris Carter or Nick Evans makes the club. The Mets will probably keep 12 pitchers and two catchers. Alex Cora, Luis Castillo, Jose Reyes, Tatis, Daniel Murphy and David Wright will be the infielders. Catalanotto, Jason Bay, Jeff Francouer, Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews would be the outfielders.

Carter and Evans will get significant times at bat in prime games this spring as the club needs to see what they’ve got. It will be interesting to see what the Mets feel is their potential upsides.

One thing for certain, the Mets have addressed one of their goals in improving their AAA Buffalo roster. The bulk of the pitching staff is on the 40-man roster and will be in major league camp. Non-roster invitees that were signed to minor league contracts, R.A. Dickey and Josh Fogg will be part of the rotation at Buffalo. Jon Niese and Tobi Stoner probably will, too.

In all the Mets signed six free agent pitchers that they hope will begin the season in AAA. The benefit in this is that it allows them to keep some of their young pitching prospects at AA Bighamtom such as Brad Holt and Jenry Mejia to start the season. Ike Davis can even start the season at AA, but he’ll probably be promoted to AAA by mid season.

These are good things for individual player development in it that allows good players to have more success before being promoted. No need to rush anyone. No need to seek a “fast-track option.”

The Mets hesitancy to sign veteran free agent starting pitchers is evidence that they are banking on enhancing player development while improving the value of their personel. If for instance, Tobi Stoner and Jon Niese are effective in AAA it allows them to move a Mike Pelfrey or John Maine to improve the ball club at some point during the season.

It could be that after the season begins, the Mets will be in a far better situation to improve the club.

Marty Noble does it well in dismissing the notion that the Mets can’t or won’t hot homeruns in Citi Field.

How many people have expertise about Citi Field? I believe the Mets were spooked by the field last season. Perhaps if Carlos Delgado had remained available and hit two or three more to the bridge beyond the seats in right-center field, Citi would have been tamed a bit and not developed any mystique. The place is bigger than some parks, but it’s a fair park. Sluggers hit home runs in fair parks.

Ralph Kiner, who knows a thing or two about home run-hitting and pitcher-friendly parks — Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, where he played, was so big that the batting cage was left on the field in left-center — doesn’t consider Citi’s size insurmountable. I’m sure Adam Dunn and Mark Reynolds don’t either. Reynolds might hit it out of the place if he plays one more series there.

If Luis Castillo can reach the second deck, David Wright can hit 12 home runs there. I wouldn’t been stunned if Wright, Bay, Carlos Beltran and Jeff Francoeur combine for 50-55 at home.

Like all the injuries, David Wright’s power drop-off was an aberration. Beltran and Jose Reyes have got to be ok, though, for the offense to be ok.

This is the hand that the Mets are forced to play. The ambiguity of the season-long injuries to Beltran and Reyes leave a big uncertainty in the future of the Mets. There just wasn’t any way around it in the ability of the Mets to plan over either the shot term or the long haul.

If Minaya is able to bring in more talent that improves the club, the big questions next month will be about the health of Beltran and Reyes. It is with these two – and not in the uncertainty of the rotation – does the season success depend on. The Mets just won’t be able to win without Beltran and Reyes in the line-up everyday.

A few days ago, I wrote of a need for a “hard pivot” in the Mets’ off-season efforts. With some subtlety, some are suggesting just that - and to Matt Holliday.

Scott Boras represents Holliday and, unlike many clubs, is known to have a good working relationship with the Mets. Carlos Betran’s deal is over after 2111 when he will be 34. David Wright will be 28. Jose Reyes will be 27. Holliday will be just 31. Even with a down year this year, I cannot see either Reyes or Wright being moved and thus will be under considerable contracts.

If the Mets have a blueprint that still includes Fernando Martinez, he can be the Mets centerfielder of the future. Martinez also will represent a left-handed bat. Two righthanded in Weight and Holliday. two lefthanded in Reyes and Martinez.

I think the Wilpons know that they will have to spend money to protect their investment. So in this event Holliday fits the template. And along with a starter, say Joel Piniero, can make the club relevant for next season.

Few people know what wishes Holliday has given to Boras. Holliday is from Oklahoma may truely want to remain in St. Louis. Boras could be just finding someone to play to get as much money from the Cardinals as he can. And the big elephant in the room remains Albert Puhols. Will the tight-fisted Bill DeWitt pay enough for them both?

Minaya and the Wilpons have had many negotiations with the slippery Boras and may be able to read him to some extent. But Boras also may not want to burn a club that has signed his players before. Nonetheless, Boras is getting what he wants in drawing the Mets – a club that pays top dollar for top talent – into the picture.

If it’s about salary on the Reds’ part, there’s a match. Matt Cerrone’s take is right on:

…by the way, arroyo, phillips and cordero will earn around $30 million next season… arroyo can be cut loose for 2011; but phillips and cordero will still be under contract, earning a combined $23 million, after which they can both be bought out and sent to free agency…

…yes, it would be crazy creative, border-line stupid, yet potentially brilliant, if a team could send, say, Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez, who will cost $18 million each of the next two seasons, to the Reds for arroyo, phillips and cordero, saving the Reds $12 million this season, and $5 million next season, while replacing them with legitimate major-league talent… yes, this is far-fetched, and total mock-GM’ing, and i can’t recall the last time i saw a deal like that happen, but, the point is, the Mets and Reds fit one another’s needs, in some way, shape or form, and i would hope they discuss a way to help eachother out, because it looks like they can…

The talent is the thing. I don’t see the Reds’ doing this without inclusion of young talent from the Mets. Say Mike Pelfrey, but hopefully not Bobby Parnell. Any one or combination of the four Reds mentioned – Cordero, Phillips, Harang and Arroyo – represent the talent fit the Mets are looking for.

I remain astonished by the amount of energy Minaya is putting into moving Castillo. Is there more of a there, there under the radar about team chemistry issues? One reason Kevin Mitchell was moved in the December 1986 Kevin McReynolds deal was to remove him from Doc Gooden. Do the Mets feel the need to remove him from Jose Reyes?

Matt Cerrone offers a fair speculative update on where Jose Reyes is with his hamstring.

My own thoughts are as follows: Like Cerrone I understand Reyes hesitancy. Tom Mckenna once said to always give your athletes the benefit of the doubt. While admittedly hard at times, I will be so with Reyes.

Several reports indicate that Reyes has scar tissue built up in his hamstring. This is both a difficult thing to treat and perform with. I have a player currently dealing with the same from a hamstring injury he sustained last spring. It limits stride and explosive power. A player of Reyes skill set and abilities is significantly limited when such symptoms are present. Everybody is different and some are more likley to develop such scaring than others. The time that is taken Reyes to return is unfortunate but not at all unprecedented.

Wow. I guess when you are not very good and the other team is, night’s like last night happen. To put it in perspective, we won these sorts of games in 1986. Some thoughts:

* I hate wasting Santana’s starts – especially those when he leaves with a lead.

* Sean Green seems to need to put an excessive amount of spin on the ball making him more of a slinger than pitcher. It’s almost as if he’s a knuckelball pitcher. Hitting Mark DeRosa with that first pitch was evidence. He badly needs some intervention by a sinker ball friendly pitching coach.

* I still do not like the manner the Mets – or any one else for that matter configures their roster. Because of the injury to Castillo, they ran out of players – save catcher Brian Schneider. There was really only one threat on the bench at any point in Fernando Tatis.

* Jose Reyes is to see the doctor again for his hamstring tendon problem and Adam Rubin understandably speculates that he might be done for the season. His injury reminds of Vince Colemen’s season long injury hamstring injury in 1991. Coleman developed a nasty ball of scar tissue in the lower third that just would go away until after an off-season’s rest. People would ask the doctor’s about surgery and they reply, “on what?’ as there wasn’t really a surgical technique that can be performed.

As it’s Reyes’ hamstring tendon – that which attaches the belly of the muscle to bone, there may be something to look at doing. Whether or not its a repair, I have no idea. As they’ve had repeated MRIs, the films they are getting are non-conclusive and why they just havent been considering some sort of corrective technique all along.
